Therapist: What to Look for
For those who are new to therapy, they might not be familiar with how the process works and how to find a Therapist that is right for them. Even though a licensed therapist is usually very qualified, it is important to find someone that suits your personality and your individual needs. There may be certain therapists who help you make more progress than others simply because their approach works best with your issues.
One of the most important things to look for in a therapist is the ability to feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable around them. Some therapists may inadvertently make you feel awkward about talking to them about personal things because they have certain habits like checking their phone or the time or they simply aren’t the right fit. If you immediately feel safe or at least more comfortable by the end of the first session then that can be a good sign.
Another key element in a good therapist is acknowledging and helping to establish your goals in what you need from therapy. They shouldn’t push their own agenda and should focus on helping you feel better and more healthy. A good therapist will help you identify a set of goals and give you the right tools and advice to help you achieve them.
Most importantly your therapist needs to be a good listener who is interested in your stories and how they represent who you are. They should avoid talking about themselves too much and should focus their energy all on you and how to give you the skills you need. A therapist who interrupts you often and seems distracted at any point will not be a good fit.
It can take a couple of tries to find the right therapist but when you feel connected, comfortable and sense you are making positive changes then you know you have found the therapist for you.
