The Consequences of Alcohol Addiction
Consequences of Alcohol Addiction
Alcohol addiction has ruined the lives of many people. Although drinking alcohol is socially acceptable, not many people realize how excessive alcoholic drinking influences their actions and negatively impact themselves and society. Alcohol addiction has contributed to car fatalities, an individual’s health, and deterioration of relationships with family and loved ones.
Alcohol abuse accounts for many car fatalities. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2016, 10,497 people have died from alcohol-impaired driving crashes, which accounts for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. In addition to the statistics, of the 1,233 traffic deaths involving children, 214 of those cases involved an alcohol-impaired driver. This disturbing amount of deaths caused by intoxication serves as a consequence of alcohol addiction.
Alcohol abuse can take a toll on an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Alcohol affects the nervous system by slowing the body’s functions that lead to poor judgment to memory loss, slurred speech, unconsciousness, and even death. People who binge drink or consume excessive amounts of alcohol increase their risk of developing diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and different types of cancer. Recently, my uncle Bo was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer due to his long history of binge drinking alcohol. He is one of the many people who struggle with alcoholism. Alcohol addiction that is not treated can increase a person’s risk of developing a disease.
Alcohol addiction can also destroy relationships with family members and loved ones. From personal experience, my uncle Bo stolen money from my grandmother’s bank account to pay a debt that he spent on alcohol and disrespected her home by coming in intoxicated at 5 a.m. in the morning from the bar. In these moments of domestic abuse, I had to contact the police to file a report to protect my grandmother. Someone that is under the influence of alcohol is prone to lose control of their behavior and inhibitions. Evidence supported by the World Health Organization show that alcohol has played a role 55% of cases in domestic violence. Such serious cases need to be taken into consideration with someone who has an addiction and prone to commit domestic abuse.
Addressing the consequences of alcohol addiction brings awareness to the masses that alcohol addiction is a serious matter. Understanding alcohol addiction may help to educate people in being more aware of their actions when they go to have a glass of alcohol beverage.
