ADDICTION AWARENESS

Why do you believe we as a nation are dealing with an addiction crisis?

What are the consequences of this addiction for the individual and society?

How can we remedy the crisis on both the individual and societal level?

I believe the world/society is struggling with a lot of addictions because of the lack of God in the world and really in our personal lives. Most of the people in this world are not saved by Christ so they are servants to sin. This truth is shown in John 8:34. It says, “Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” This is the reason so many people are addicts to terrible things. Addiction is doing something over and over again most of the time because of the feeling people get when they indulge in that something. This is done because people not saved by Christ only know sin and so they indulge in it because by themselves they can’t stop. As a servant to sin there is a price to be paid to set us free. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Also in Romans 6:23 it states, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This means that all humans have sinned and man’s only way to pay the price for his sin is an eternity in Hell. Although humans can’t pay the price to be free, God, in love, provided a way to be free. Jesus is the way to be freed from the bond of sin. As John 14:6 says, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” Jesus died on a cross to save all mankind from their sin. This is shown in John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” The sole reason for Jesus’ death on the cross was not for show, but was to take the sins of the world on Himself and pay the eternal price of death. Jesus rose from the dead 3 days after His crucifixion to conquered eternal and spiritual death. Although Jesus’ death is the only way to be free there is something we need to do in order to truly be saved from sin. In Matthew it says to repent and in Mark it says to repent and believe. To become saved from sin and a child of God a person needs to repent of the sin they have done and believe that Jesus died on the cross and paid for their sin. After doing so they are now a child of God and the Holy Spirit now lives within them. With the Holy Spirit’s help people can start living a life glorifying God and overcoming their addictions.

The entire world has addiction problems and they affect every aspect of a person’s daily life. A person who has a drinking addiction always is itching to get a drink all throughout their day. From the moment they wake up to the time they crash at night they are looking forward to the night time so they could get are drink. This affects how they handle situations with their families, friends, and coworkers. Addicts to alcohol become angry fast not only drunk but even sober because they don’t get the drink they want when they want or because someone continually is talking to them and they just want to be alone. A person’s addictions not only affect themselves but also the people in their lives. A person’s life is ruined by different addictions and they can hurt those around them by their response to the consequences of their addictions. Families are just as affected and even more affected by the addict’s responses than any other person. First off, the families’ finances are quickly gone when there is an addict in the family. An addict will drain the money out of all bank account just to get the next fix. This makes a problem for the family because things like buying food, new clothes, shoes, or paying bills are something the family struggles to do. Secondly, there will be marital stress if the addict is married. It will be extremely hard to trust the addicted spouse, not knowing what they are doing with the money made, not knowing how they will respond when something happens. If there are children in the family it will be stressful for the non-addicted spouse to try to protect the kids from letting the kids see their parent drunk or even protecting from physical harm to the kids from the parent. On that note, thirdly, the children will be affected by the addicted parent, physically and emotionally. In an article, I found about families and alcohol addicts it says, “Children will notice radical changes in behavior, such as parent turning from happy to angry, and may falsely believe that they are the cause of these mood swings. Self-blame, guilt, frustration, and anger can emerge as the child tries to understand why the parent acts this way.” (Watkins, Meredith. “What Are the Problems & Effects of Alcoholism on Families & Marriages.” American Addiction Centers, 6 May 2020 americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/family-marital-problems.). Children are greatly affected emotionally because of their parent’s emotional state. Children are also affected physically when parents either drink to much are are not mentally stable or even when sober but easily provoked and physically harm their children. Parents of addicts are affected as well as they look at their child’s lifestyles and what they have become and are ashamed. Addict’s actions once again not only affect themselves but also their families. This tears up society as it creates so many broken families and untrustworthy people.

Here is what people can do to start overcoming their addictions if they are a new child of God. In Matthew 6:31-34 it states, “Therefore take no thought, saying What shall we eat? or , What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” When we put God first in our lives, which is something done after salvation, He will take care of us. People are addicted to many things because to them it is an escape from stuff they are dealing with in their lives or feelings they don’t know how to describe so they don’t want to think about them. If God is put first in a person’s life then He will help them sort through those feelings and help them get through and overcome the stuff happening in their lives. In a few verses before that it says “ No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” This verse proves if someone tries to give their heart to two things they will fail and a person can only serve one person; themselves or God. Another verse to go along with this topic is James 1:8 which expresses, “A double minded man is unstable in all His ways.” A person who tries to live for God but cannot let go of their addictions will be insincere about his intentions. So to start off overcoming addictions people need to seek a relationship with God and a life of godliness. Godliness can be defined as– a wholehearted loving devotion to God and His ways. God will take it from there, by giving a person the strength to live holy if they give their all to God.
