The World Is Moving Too Fast
There are many reasons that I believe that the United States is dealing with an addiction crisis. The two main reasons are lack of mental health resources and how capitalism requires adults to work non-stop. A lot of addicts start because they are trying to find a way to cope with trauma or they need a break from life. That cigarette, that glass of tequila, or that bag of donuts that you are binge eating is a way to dissociate with what is going on in your life.
Once you have this addiction, you now have this weight on your shoulders. It now controls your life. On an individual level it can negatively affect personal relationships. Once those relationships are negatively affected it starts a cycle of hurt people hurting people. Because society still has a stigma against mental illness the addict and their family will likely be judged and ostracized.
A solution that we can start with is making mental health resources readily available. Luckily, I have insurance and can pay for a therapist every two weeks but that is not the case for everyone. Even if you don’t have a mental illness, talking with someone can really help you see certain things clearly. I also believe that you shouldn’t have to use a sick day to take a mental health break. There are some days where you just can’t and you shouldn’t. Continually going and going with eventually cause you to burnout which is terrible on your mental health. If we have affordable or free resources for mental health resources a lot of people won’t turn to unhealthy outlets because they have better ones to use.
