Addiction Awareness Scholarship Campaign 2020 – The Roots of Addiction

The Roots of Addiction

Drugs have been seen in many cultures spanning back to 300 B.C. Addictive behvior only acoompnaied some those durgs. In Americaa, there has been a rise in addicition and drug use almost every year. This coorelates with a rise in mental illness, crime, and poverty. All three of rhese factor are signficantly higher for those in marginalized groups; women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, people below or at the poverty line etc.

I believe as a nation the United States has accumulated the most people with addiciton because of our focus on capitalism and wealth which has amounted to us becoming one of the most wealthy countries in the world, but at what cost to our citizens and other countries. The wealth and educaion gap in America only gets bigger as the top one percent continue to hold all the wealth and the working class are left having to work for almost nothing to barely make ends meet. Some people resort to drugs and addiciion to get away from the situation they have been pushed into. This cycle of poverty and exploitation would push anyone over the edge.

Additionally, drug dealers use people’s addictions to make money that does not cycle back into the economy and does not go towards the nation’s GDP. The punishment’s for dealing drugs is no less than ten years on the first offense. Possesion of drugs is a misdeamnor meaning no more than a year in prision, however this is almost accomanied by a steep fine which is unlikely this person can pay in the first place.

Why is it that people who are arrested and punished for doing drugs are more likely to be a minority and not a white person, even though drug use is almost even across the board. There is a system of instituional racism in America that target minorities and pushing many people into a cycle of poverty that they can not get out of. The consequences of addiction last generations and lifetimes. People who’s parents are addicts are ten times more likely to be addicts in the future. To remedy this, we as a society must address the injustice and unfair treatment of peoples. It is unacceptable that there are people living in the same country, maybe even the same state or city and one of them does not have enough money to feed their family and the other has too much money to deal with.

Thank you.
