Safely Detoxing from Alcohol
Withdrawal symptoms during alcohol detoxification can be serious or even life-threatening. For this reason, alcohol detox requires round-the-clock medical supervision and should not be attempted alone.
Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS)
Referring to the cluster of symptoms a person may experience in the hours and days following alcohol cessation, alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) typically causes anxiety, restlessness, nausea, and mild tremor. In more severe cases, symptoms may also include fever, rapid breathing, profuse sweating, and agitation.
Those with mild alcohol dependence may experience only minor withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, and restlessness that subside within a few days.
In heavy, long-term drinkers, serious withdrawal symptoms can occur, including seizures and delirium tremens (DTs), the latter of which can be life threatening.
Delirium tremens is characterized by insomnia, extreme hyperactivity, hallucinations, body tremors, rapid mood changes, deep sleep for more than 24 hours, agitation, extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and touch, and other symptoms. While withdrawal symptoms like seizures and DTs, occur only in a relatively small percentage (5-10%) of patients overall,1,2 people with severe alcohol dependence should never attempt to detox on their own.
World-Class Addiction Treatment in a Compassionate Environment
Regardless of a person’s level of alcohol dependence, it’s important to seek professional help. Medical professionals can help manage uncomfortable symptoms like nausea, headache, and dehydration, as well as more serious, potentially life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.
The expert medical team at Seasons in Malibu uses an evidence-based approach to treatment, which leads to better outcomes for our clients. We may recommend certain pharmacological treatments, including the use of benzodiazepines, to help manage AWS symptoms. Upon arrival at our treatment center each patient undergoes a medical assessment to determine the best individualized treatment program for their needs.
