My Alcohol Abuse Causes me to Be Unfaithful
Addiction can wreak havoc on your mental and physical health as well as ruin your personal life in ways that you never anticipated. While under the influence of alcohol, people tend to make reckless choices that carry serious consequences. Unfortunately, acts of infidelity are all too common when someone is dealing with an alcohol addiction.
Alcohol causes people to behave in ways that they never would when they are sober and this is especially the case with addiction. An alcoholic may start lying, stealing and cheating on their partner because of their addiction problem. Alcohol lowers inhibitions, creates a false sense of confidence and can lead to situations where infidelity inevitably occurs.
Even though cheating on a partner can be a symptom of alcoholism, there is no excuse for that kind of behavior. Having an addiction does not mean you had a reason to hurt someone else. For people in recovery, rebuilding trust with their partner can be one of the most difficult steps that they go through.
In order to move on from infidelity it is important to be completely abstinent from alcohol and make an effort to commit to a sober lifestyle. For those in twelve step programs, one of the most important steps is to admit that you have wronged others and ask for forgiveness. For those who have cheated on their partners they will need to come clean about their behavior and take responsibility for their actions.
Once you have confessed to your actions it will be up to you and your partner to try to rebuild your relationship if they choose to stay. One key element is to work on communication so that you understand each other and can build up trust again. It can be challenging for a relationship to recover from infidelity but it is possible with time and patience.
