The Addiction Crisis in America

By Camilia Hernandez

Why do I believe as a nation we are dealing with an addiction crisis? The biggest problem is that with addiction is America was not built or prepared to deal with an addiction crisis. Drug production and trafficking and consumption affects every country in the world. Even with all the attempts to stop trafficking and consumption of drugs it has not stopped. Drugs are still remaining constantly studied. Even with eradication programs production is simply pushed into another country. What are the consequences of this addiction for the individual and society? Drugs are chemicals that affect the body and the brain. Sometimes the health consequences can be long term or permanent. Even after you stop using the drugs and substances. The use of drugs can even cause death. Addiction affects society in many ways.It causes the individual to lose employment. It impairs physical and mental health. Addiction also causes a rise in violence and risky behaviors and increased crime rates. And the worst and biggest problem of all is child abuse and child neglect. Children of addicts end up getting taken by the state and child protective services. And put into the foster care system and sometimes the parents end up in jail. So it tears the family apart and the addict does not get to see their children or child. The child’s or children’s lives are forever changed. How can we remedy this crisis on both the individual and societal level. On an individual level we can remedy the crisis by intervening early before the condition can progress further. There are health care systems that have extended comprehensive continuous care recovery is now a more achievable outcome. At a societal level we can help the addiction crisis by having people with long term sobriety to demonstrate that recovery is just not possible, but probable, with the right individualized self care plan and support from the community. We also need to stop the stigma of addiction and addicts. The resistance to get treatment often lies on the stigma and beliefs about addiction. As a society we need to be more open and less judgemental about addiction and addicts.
