For the Love of Drugs, Alcohol and Foods

I believe our nation is dealing with an addiction crisis because people are using drugs and alcohol and sometimes food as a coping mechanism. Many people do not know how to deal with things in life, so they turn to drugs, alcohol or food. Stress of a job, stress in a relationship, childhood trauma, stress in school (grade school or college), financial stress, stress of an illness, the Covid-19 pandemic, etc. are all examples of things that people may be dealing with in life.

The consequences of these addictions for the individual can vary. One suffering with an addiction to drugs and alcohol or food could cause major damage to their body. Liver damage is one example of how one could damage their body abusing alcohol. Lung damage is an example of how one could damage their body abusing drugs. Obesity, which can result in Diabetes is one example of how one could damage their body abusing foods. There are many other consequences as well, such as, losing your job, losing your home, losing your partner, going to prison, etc.

The consequences of these addictions on our society can also vary. When someone is an addict, they will do anything to get money to support their habits. They will rob and lie to support their habits. Robbing stores, banks, etc. can cause a major problem in our society, possibly causing individuals to lose their jobs if that business can’t recover from their loss. Another consequence would be an increase in crime. Unfortunately, addicts will also kill out of rage if they aren’t able to get funds to support their habits. Some addicts also kill because they simply aren’t thinking clearly and are under the influence, car accidents, for example. This will cause a decrease in our population. Lastly, another consequence of one’s addiction on our society would be pollution. Oftentimes, we see drug paraphernalia left outside on sidewalks, playgrounds, the metro, etc., and this can possibly cause a spread of diseases if these items are shared.

I think the best way to remedy this crisis is to continue to have different programs that are available. I do believe there should be more facilities that are free of cost. Maybe if the program is free, it will encourage the addict a little more to get the help they need. Another remedy I think would be a good idea is to have addiction courses in school. We learn about the consequences of having sexual intercourse. We could also learn about the consequences of becoming an addict.
