Consequences of Unhealthy Pleasures
According to the Centers for Disease Control, six deaths take place a day due to alcohol poisoning. 100,000 people die every year as a result of drinking and driving, suicides, homicides, and health problems. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving over 50 percent of American youths between the ages of 12-20 have tried alcohol. More than 4,700 teens die every year as a result of teenage alcohol use. According to NHTSA, 10,511 people died in alcohol-related accidents in 2018 and the FBI estimates over 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Theses statistic itself proves that we as the nation are dealing with an addiction crisis. Besides the facts, the personal reason why I believe that we as a nation are dealing with addiction is by seeing people lose their loved ones including my own cousin due to drunk drivers. I myself almost lost my life at the age of 18, It was August 2020 I was preparing to move to college. I had shopping to do for my dorm room, which I was looking forward to for a week. I had planned where I will go and what I will buy… I had worked so hard to attend college to be a first-generation student. As I was taking a step toward my dream I was hit by a drunk driver who ran into the red light. I still can’t comprehend what happened, but I was upside down in a car with cuts and burn on my hands. The smoke from the airbag blast had filled the car, but I couldn’t move a finger. I sit there like a statue with tears falling down until paramedics started pulling me out. Nothing happened to the diver who hit me, but yet he was taken in an ambulance because he was so drugged to even stand up properly. I was able to recover physically, but it left me mentally damaged to this day. I get anxious when I have to get inside the car and I stop driving since that day. There are many consequences of addiction to individuals and society. The addiction kills individual slowly, make them homeless, lose their jobs and family. When someone is addicted they won’t hesitate to take the wrong step for the substance which affects society. Addicted people driving under substance doesn’t only affect them but put society in danger as well. We can remedy the crisis on both the individual and society by making it harder to gets a hand on substance. Diving privilege should only be given to people with no history of substance. Bars shouldn’t allow someone to over drink if they are by themselves. Police should be more alert in catching drunk drivers before an accident occurs. More help and health advice should be provided to peoples because lots of times people abuse substances due to mental problems. Lots of people don’t get help or seek help because herbs are expensive, so making it’s cheap or free will be very helpful to individuals and society.
