This nation has endured multiple forms of hardships from the Great Depression, enduring both great wars, recessions, and now the 2020 pandemic. No matter what the challenge that may arise, we have prevailed and became successful at overcoming such obstacles……. except for the War on Drugs. Drugs ae prevalent in American society and an be witnessed from time to time. The witnessing could be something as teenagers smoking pot on Huntington Beach to someone shooting up a harder drug in Seattle. There are many speculations on why the War of Drugs had faced magnitudes of defeat, but these thoughts are not crucial for this paper. What is crucial is the discussion of drugs and its impact on a personal, intimate level. Drugs are nasty, little things that has caused this nation to continue to face an addiction crisis, causes such tribulations amongst people and the community, and a solution must be discovered for the preservation of American’s wellbeing.

This amazing country is still facing an addiction crisis and it looks like it is not going to slow down anytime soon. We are experiencing such addiction issues because there seems to be an underlining issue with people’s mental health where they seek a mind-altering substance to make them feel better. That is what drugs are known to do and is a known source of remedy for a user. It does not help how the pandemic is affecting people and for those who have abstained for so long may have found their vices once again. People must understand how important it is to upkeep one’s mental health. With us living busier lives, such tasks or chores could be tossed to the side.

There are several issues addictions can cause in a person’s life. In some parts of the country, there are stringent drug laws. Getting arrested and going through the legal system is a stressful event and is not designed for a hardcore addict to succeed. The guidelines of most programs is to abstain from drugs and to do voluntary drug screenings. Being a part of this could cause financial hardship for the sufferer. This sufferer might also lose their jobs due to their addiction habit. In doing so, paying for their child or children’s wellbeing must be difficult. Some are known to break the law in order to maintain their drug habits and to obtain some sort of income to take care of their loved ones. The balancing act of taking care of your loved ones and drug addiction is maddening and this is where one of these has to suffer, the addiction or the loved ones.

When it comes to what can be the catalyst for a person to adopt an addiction habit, there are many possibilities. The common denominator seems to be an issue in mental health. It was stated that earlier when an addict is placed into the legal system, the addict is not set up for success. The reason being is even though the person has to take classes, these classes are conducted to meet the requirements of the state and not for the best interest of the addict. The classes is not tailored to the addict but instead a broad group. How is the addict supposed to get better if their personal issues are not being discussed or addressed? Instead of classes, it would be more invested to have the addict attend mandatory counseling sessions for both individual and group. Having the addict attend Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is encouraged but shouldn’t be mandatory.

Addiction takes a toll on both the individual and the people around him or her. The interesting thing about addiction is the types of suffering that a person endures can be specific tailored to them depending on their upbringing and experiences. Regardless of where a person comes from, there will be pain and suffering that is stemmed from addiction. A person needs to transform from being a victim of their addiction to champion of their sobriety to reach peace in their life.
