Addiction and Me
My father, and uncle were both alcoholics. My cousin, and two close friends in high school were drug addicts, and my grandmother is a hoarder. All but two of them are dead. It took my father wrapping his car around a tree, almost losing his leg and all sensation in his hand and his friend, the passenger, dying before he could put the bottle down. My uncle, my cousin, and my two friends never found their reason to get sober, and addiction took their lives for it. I know many do not understand the strength addiction has, they say it is a choice. But anyone who has seen the trembling bodies, and has wiped the cold sweat off the brow of a loved one knows…no one would chose this. My life long connection to addiction drove me to want to change how we treat addicts in America. That is why I study psychology, and is why my goal is decriminalize drug use, provide safe and sanitary places to do drugs, and create social programs to give addicts the reason to get sober. They can not always wait and find it on their own…they’re lives are far too precious to wait.
