The
opposite of addiction is a connection

People
commonly associate addiction as a psychological and physical
inability to stop consuming a chemical substance. However, today, we
know that the term addiction doesn’t refer only to the dependence
of substances, such as drugs or pain killers, but also to activities
or behaviors they do compulsively or cannot stop doing.

We live in a
culture where people feel very vulnerable to all kinds of addiction,
such as smartphones, social media, shopping or eating. We exchange
old friends over a space in society where people have a “better”
image of your, we exchange interpersonal talks and connections over
irrelevant things such as watching a TV series, and the result is
that our society is one of the loneliest ever.

Over the
centuries series of experiments tried to explain the massive increase
of addictions worldwide. One of those experiments was relevant in the
early 20
th
century. In the research, they put a rat in an empty cage, and they
gave him two bottles of water, one with pure water and another with
cocaine. The result was that almost 100% of the rats choose the
drugged water, and some used it so compulsively until they suffered
an overdose, and as a consequence in some cases they died.

A few years
later, this experiment a psychology teacher called Bruce Alexander
analyzed this experiment and made it in a different way to prove his
thoughts about addiction crisis. He put rats in a cage where we
called “Rat Park,” who was basically a cage full of everything
rats love, lots of cheese, colored balls, tunnels, other rats to make
connections, and also the same two bottles of water from the first
experiment. The result was that almost 100% of the rats preferred de
pure water, and those who choose the drugged water did not die or
suffered from overdoses.

The conclusion
is: addiction has more to do with the “cage” of the addicted to
the kind of substance he uses. Therefore, someone who has any trauma,
isolation from society, bad relationships with parents and family,
and struggles a lot in life is more likely to be addicted, because
addiction causes relief from the tuff reality.

The effect of
addiction on substances or others is the “feel-good “sense
because of chemical called Dopamine who is released in the brain.
That’s why addicted people seemed to not care about how bad does
addiction makes to their self’s and those around them; they
sometimes want to escape from reality.

However, in
some cases, the consequences are severe to society and themselves.
The government increases every year its budged in a tentative to stop
illegal drug traffic, to control the legal drugs like alcohol and
painkillers, and also in treatment costs. To those who are addicted,
the re-connection with society and families gets more complicated,
and also affects their mental and physical health directly.

The final
question is: what can we do to deal with the addiction crisis? The
answer is more straightforward than people imagine: connection! We
should focus on re-establishing relationships with friends, family,
and society to show the addicted they loved, to show them they matter
in the community, and give them a reason to get up in the morning. If
we stay in an empty life with no intentions to fight for, like the
first experiment, we will indeed drink from de drugged water of life.

Mahatma Gandhi
said that the future depends on what we do in the present, so we
should all together, as a society, face this crisis to make a better
world. The opposite of addiction is connection, so let’s spread
love and build de relationships between each other’s tighter.
