When someone in recovery is working on improving their health and maintaining their sobriety they may need to focus a lot of their energy on self-care. The idea of self-care can mean different things but for someone who is recovering from an addiction there are general areas of their health they need to focus on. Self-care in recovery focuses on physical, mental, spiritual and social health.

 

Physical Self-Care

 

A person’s physical well-being can have a major impact on how they feel and can even determine their ability to remain sober. Physical self-care means exercising regularly to boost endorphins and relieve stress as well as eating healthy foods to stabilize your mood. It is also crucial to get enough sleep every night as this can impact your attitude and emotional well-being.

 

Emotional and Spiritual Self-Care

 

Stress and negative emotions are some of the biggest contributors to the possibility of relapse. Emotional self-care can mean doing activities like meditation, writing, spending time in nature and finding other ways to heal spiritually. Finding balance in life and not allowing stress to become overwhelming can help make it easier to maintain sobriety.

 

Social Self-Care

 

People in recovery need to have a support group and a community around them that supports their decision to quit. They need to have peers who are also sober, a mentor or sponsor to help through difficult times and supportive family members or friends who they can talk to. You also need to set boundaries and let people know you are sober when necessary so that they won’t endanger your recovery.

 

Self-care is crucial to sobriety and practicing these main types of self-care can make it easier to get through recovery and can help you maintain a more holistic approach to wellness.
